Vila Madalena is an interesting and picturesque district in the West Side of São Paulo. It is here in this neighborhood that in 1975, I begin my work with wood. Yet an informal work, but already with clear concepts. I graduate on Architecture; I move to California for one year, studying construction techniques in wood and iron. Back to Brazil in 1978, at the same Vila Madalena neighborhood I start the Atelier Carlos Motta. Design and construction of furniture, architecture, utilitarian objects, sculptures, are the main work we do here. The Atelier consists of an architectural office, a group to develop new projects and prototypes – a well-equipped wood shop, as well as the financial and commercial departments. All prototypes are made here in the workshop, but follow different production places. Some go to our other shop, outside Sao Paulo, where they will run small lines of handcrafted furniture. Others go to industries that follow concepts aligned with ours, and there will be mass-produced. Others still follow to super workshops that perform sophisticated, expensive and handmade furniture with great content. We also produce special requests here at Atelier. That is, we design and execute unique pieces, developed specifically for the customer, whether residential, hotels, restaurants, museums, churches, boats, etc… as much as some conceptual pieces for exhibitions and collectors. The architecture and design that we develop here at the Atelier follow together the same concept: the search for the obvious, the simple, respectful and longevous. We act in the area of civil construction, building what we design in architecture. We are partnered with three groups of civil construction workers, which were empowered at the Mantiqueira Mountains in the last 16 years. The Atelier Carlos Motta was born at the 70’s, through a strong counterculture movement. Surf, Yoga, food and a natural life. Ecology and respect for nature, pulsing through our veins. It’s at the genesis and at the Atelier DNA the environmental and social responsibility. To cause the least possible impact on our planet and sharing the financial results with those that are part of the production chain, motivate us to exist and work in the pursuit of excellence.
