Atelier Carlos Motta: 40 years – Espasso Inc Gallery, NY – September 2015

First ever US retrospective of world-renowned Brazilian designer’s work included new furniture pieces ESPASSO launched with the exhibition’s opening

ESPASSO – the premier design gallery and retailer in the US and UK for modern and contemporary Brazilian furniture, art and design objects – was pleased to announce the opening of ATELIER CARLOS MOTTA: 40 YEARS, the first ever US retrospective of the world-renowned Brazilian designer Carlos Motta. The exhibition features more than 50 furniture pieces Motta has designed over the course of his critically acclaimed career and presented 11 limited edition pieces created specifically for the show. ATELIER CARLOS MOTTA: 40 YEARS opened to the public on September 16, 2015.

ATELIER CARLOS MOTTA: 40 YEARS highlights the diverse range of Motta’s design and includes limited edition, handcrafted pieces, bespoke works and collaborations with major furniture manufacturers. Motta draws from a diverse range of personal interests – surfing, yoga, nature, environmental and social responsibility – when designing his furniture, which is made using sustainable methods, ecologically certified wood, in addition to raw and reclaimed materials. The Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Museu da Casa Brasileira in São Paulo, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Curitiba and many other prestigious institutions have exhibited his pieces and organized shows of his work.

“Over the years, I have strived to create works that are honest and speak to my philosophy of designing pieces that are simple, respectful and long-lasting. This exhibition is extremely exciting for me because it allows visitors to see who I am as a designer by viewing a broad selection of my pieces at once,” said Carlos Motta.

“Carlos Motta’s furniture is modern Brazilian design at its finest and his approach translates across many disciplines to create works that are beautiful, unique and noteworthy. ESPASSO is honored to mark Motta’s 40th year of designing with the first ever US retrospective of his pieces and to launch limited-edition pieces created for this show,” said ESPASSO’s owner and curator Carlos Junqueira.

For ATELIER CARLOS MOTTA: 40 YEARS, Motta will personally transform the first floor of ESPASSO’S gallery by customizing the décor and hand drawing illustrations and detailed notes that will appear on walls alongside the pieces. Motta will also create keepsakes for visitors to take home from the exhibition, large print versions of inspirational photographs he personally selected and autographed.

Highlights of the works being premiered include: Sergio – a loving tribute to Motta’s close friend, the late Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues – which transforms reclaimed Peroba Rosa wood and sanded iron into a beautiful rotating armchair; Nave, a combination lamp and side table, made using a varitey of methods including laser cutting, welding and oxidizing, to transform Ibuia and Amendoim wood, rusted iron and coffee filters into the most complex piece in the exhibit; Pinda, a completely handmade, ergonomically designed chair that evokes tactual sensuality with spikes along its back that contrast its smooth wood front; and Ferrão, a table constructed from reclaimed Peroba Rosa and Aroeira woods, which both are typically used in the civic construction, and evokes medieval design.

The exhibit will also highlight some of Motta’s notable pieces including his award-winning chairs Cadeira Rio and Cadeira Estrela, Sabre armchairs which have been exhibited in France’s Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne and The London Design Festiva and his popular Astúrias armchairs.

Motta opened his multidisciplinary, design studio Atelier Carlos Motta in 1975 in Vila Madalena, a picturesque district in São Paulo, where he works in furniture design and architecture. In addition to being exhibited in some of Brazil’s lauded cultural institutions, Motta has created furniture for the Brazilian President’s official residence Alvorada Palace, one of the largest Catholic churches in the world Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida and the Pinacoteca do Estado museum.
